Understanding Sleep Apnea and Airway Restrictions

Sleep apnea, including Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS), can significantly disrupt airflow through your upper airway, leading to poor sleep, chronic fatigue, and other health complications. Our clinic focuses on identifying and treating the root causes of these conditions.

What Causes Sleep Apnea and UARS

Both conditions stem from the underdevelopment of the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw). When the jaws don’t grow to their full, widened size, the mouth and nasal spaces are restricted.

This squeezes the tongue down and back towards the throat (leading to OSA) or narrow the nasal or throat passages (causing UARS).

  1. Dietary Changes: A shift towards softer, processed foods has diminished the necessary stimulation for jaw growth, resulting in restricted airway spaces.

  2. Breastfeeding vs. Bottle Feeding: Breastfeeding aids natural jaw development, whereas bottle feeding can impede this process, affecting airway size.

  3. Pacifier Use: Prolonged use can narrow the maxilla and affect tongue positioning, reducing airway space.

  4. Genetics: Family history plays a significant role, with inherited traits influencing the likelihood of developing sleep apnea.

Advanced Airway Expansion Treatment

Our sleep apnea treatment focuses on airway expansion, creating more space for the tongue and nasal cavity to enhance airflow. This approach helps alleviate or eliminate sleep apnea symptoms without invasive procedures.

How Our Treatment Works

Utilizing Epigenetic Maxillary Expansion, we stimulate natural bone growth along the palatal suture using a Biomimetic Oral Appliance (BOA). This removable device mimics natural biological processes to expand the maxilla effectively.

The Treatment Process

Begin your journey to better sleep with a comprehensive evaluation at our Austin clinic. Our process includes a home sleep study, CBCT scan, and detailed medical-dentofacial records to tailor a treatment plan to your specific needs. Treatment typically spans 12-18 months, with regular appointments with our sleep apnea doctor to monitor progress.

Benefits of Biomimetic Oral Appliances

Choosing our sleep apnea treatment offers numerous advantages:

  1. Comfortable and discreet appliances

  2. Non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical solution

  3. Noticeable improvements in sleep quality within weeks

  4. Enhanced facial aesthetics, including defined cheekbones and reduced eye circles

  5. Permanent expansion of maxillary bone

How expansion works

The science that made this miraculous treatment possible is called “Epigenetic Maxillary Expansion”.  It’s a technique that involves stimulation of your genes to grow bone along your palatal suture utilizing a “Biomimetic Oral Appliance” (BOA).  A BOA is a removable oral device that looks like a highly specialized retainer (see above pic).  Its “biomimetic” because it mimics your natural growth biology to expand your maxilla.

The Treatment Process

If you would like to take advantage of this revolutionary approach, your journey will begin at our office with medical-dentofacial records and diagnostic data collection. These will include a home sleep study, a CBCT scan, intra/extra oral pictures, a head and neck measurements, and much more. The data collected from this appointment will allow me to create a treatment plan that best suits your needs and goals. On average, treatment lasts for 12-18 months. You’ll visit Dr. Trivedi periodically throughout that period so he can adjust your appliances and monitor your progress.

Benefits of a BOA

Our treatment offers numerous benefits, including:

  • The appliances are comfortable and nearly invisible
  • Is the only non-surgical and non-pharmaceutical option available
  • Patients begin to notice positive results, such as excellent sleep quality, within the first few days or weeks of treatment
  • Most patients’ faces change for the better: such as more defined cheekbones, reduced or eliminated “double chin”, less dark eye circles, and enhanced facial symmetry.
  • Permanently grows maxillary bone
  • Greatly reduces to eliminates symptoms of UARS
  • The BOA that we use is FDA-approved for the treatment of mild to severe OSA.

Restricted airway before expansion

Expanded airway after only 3 months of our BOA therapy.
